The long summer days are slowly giving way to crisp mornings, shiny new shoes, and the smell of freshly sharpened pencils. Yes, it’s that time again — back to school!
Whether your little one is starting school for the very first time or heading into another exciting year, September is a month of curiosity, fresh beginnings, and a touch of nerves. One of the best ways to make the transition smoother is by turning learning into an adventure.
That’s exactly what I had in mind when I created My First Science Alphabet. Science can feel like a big, complicated subject — even for adults! But at its heart, it’s about asking questions, exploring the world around us, and marvelling at how things work. And that’s something every child is already a natural at.

In the book, each letter of the alphabet introduces a fun science word. From A for Anatomy to Z for Zoology, children get to discover big ideas in a playful way. There are even a few experiments included for you to try at home! You don’t need a lab coat or a microscope to enjoy it — just a little curiosity (and perhaps a comfy reading nook).
Why Science at Storytime?
Back-to-school season often brings with it a flurry of spelling lists and number charts. But science is a wonderful way to balance learning with imagination. When children learn that the stars above them are made of the same stuff as we are, or that rainbows are light bending through droplets of water, their eyes widen with wonder.
Reading about science in simple, colourful snippets plants seeds for future discovery. It shows children that learning isn’t just something that happens in the classroom — it’s part of their everyday world.
A Little Tip for Parents

Try weaving small experiments into your daily routine this month. Talk about shadows on the walk home, float an apple in water to see why it doesn’t sink, or let your child mix colours with paint. These tiny sparks of curiosity can grow into a lifelong love of science.
And when you’re ready to settle down for a cosy bedtime story, My First Science Alphabet is there to add a sprinkle of discovery to the end of the day.
Here’s to a school year filled with questions, laughter, and plenty of “aha!” moments.
